Kasim tossed the trash into the dumpster, muttering curses under his breath when he noticed that Rosalee had already tossed the trash for the coffee shop.

And wasn’t that just pathetic? He was so desperate to spend a few moments with the woman, even if it meant standing next to a rusted, green dumpster that absolutely reeked!

Going back inside, he grabbed his keys and went back out to the front. “Joe, I’m taking off. Do you need me to do anything else before I go?”

Joe glanced up as he flipped the sign on the front door. “Nah. You go and have a good time tonight. Are you taking Rosalee somewhere special tonight?”

Kasim stopped, staring at the man. “How do you know that I’m taking Rosalee out?”

Joe patted Kasim on the shoulder in a fatherly fashion. “Son, you’re one of the hardest workers I’ve ever met. And the names of the new suppliers you gave me,” he paused, shaking his head slightly, “are going to save me a hell of a lot of money. So I know you’re smart. I don’t understand why you’re here, working in a hardware store in the middle of nowhere.” He chuckled at Kasim’s chagrin. “However, one thing you don’t understand is the nature of a small town.”

Wary now, he crossed his arms over his chest before frowning questioningly at Joe. “What did I do?” he asked.

“Well, you kissed Rosalee this morning, in full view of everyone. Gossip spreads like wildfire around here.” He chuckled, his grin widening at Kasim’s irritated scowl. “But even more than that, Rosalee has been dancing around, beaming and humming all day long. Then there’s you,” he commented, eyeing Kasim meaningfully as he rubbed his chin as if contemplating the nature of the universe. “Every time you caught yourself looking out the window, you pushed yourself harder. Almost as if you were punishing yourself for trying to catch a glimpse of our fair barista next door.” He grinned. “How’d I do?”

Kasim’s arms dropped to his side. Obviously, he hadn’t hidden his feelings as well as he’d thought. “You know, it’s strange, but most people have trouble reading me. When I play poker with my friends, I win more often than I lose.”

“Not around here,” Joe teased. “We’re a bit more laid back, but that doesn’t mean we’re unobservant. We see all!”

Kasim nodded, appreciating the man’s observations. “Fine. I’ll do better on Monday.”

“Tuesday,” Joe corrected. “Remember that we’re closed on Sunday and Monday.”

Kasim opened his mouth to say something about that to Joe, but then snapped his mouth shut. That was a conversation for another day.

“Good night, Joe,” Kasim replied, pushing his way out the front door.

“Night, Ken! Have fun tonight!”

Kasim waved to the man as he headed towards his sedan. If he scanned the area, looking for Rosalee’s SUV in the parking lot, well, it was just instinct. He wanted to ensure that she wasn’t working too hard.

He drove into the next town where he’d discovered a gym. The rates were cheap, but the real reason he’d set up a membership was because of the showers.
